The thyroid is an endocrine gland located in the neck, which releases two hormones into the blood, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).

Their function is to regulate the growth, metabolism, and energy.

Thyroid disorders are common, and about 1 out of 20 people is prone to suffer from some type of thyroid disorder during their life. Yet, even though everyone might suffer from them regardless of the sex and age, women are more prone to these issues.

Thyroid disorders are a result of the imbalance of the thyroid hormone and can be of two types, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.

The first one occurs in the case of an excessive secretion of the thyroid hormone, and its most common symptoms include sudden weight loss, sleep issues, anxiety, irritation, nervousness, a rapid heart rate, diarrhea, and heat sensitivity.

On the other hand, hypothyroidism occurs in case the poor function of the thyroid, and the most common symptoms include weight gain, hair thinning, fatigue, dry skin, muscle pain, cramps, concentration difficulties, excess fluid in tissues, and cold sensitivity.

In case the thyroid begins to function very hard, then it causes the formation of a large lump in the throat, which is a symptom of iodine deficiency, called goiter.

These are the main reasons for Thyroid Disorders:

  • Chronic stress
  • Iodine deficiency
  • Toxin overload
  • Metal buildup

Hyperthyroidism might also be caused by Graves’ sickness, thyroiditis, or toxic adenomas, while hypothyroidism can be a result of thyroid removal, lithium or iodine overexposure, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
