When we ripped it out, we noticed that the tile underneath was still in great condition. It was an ugly color, but in good condition. To save time and money, we decided to paint it.
We bought the {aff} Rustoleum Tub and Tile Kit to paint the tile. This stuff is like magic! We have used it before and wanted to try it on this tile project.
To use this product, make sure you have a high quality mask and tons of ventilation. The smell is pretty strong so you want to make sure you can open some windows and have a mask on while using it.
The first step you need to do is wash the tile extremely well. You don’t want any residue left on it. Then, sand all of the tile. This roughs up the tile surface so that the paint will adhere to it.
Next, you need to mix the two cans that come in the kit together. You pour the smaller can into the bigger can and shake very well (all instructions are on the box).
Then, you pour the mixture into a paint tray.
You can use a paint brush or a paint roller. Try both and see what you like best. The paint is very thin so it runs easily. My husband felt like he had a better grasp on it with a roller. Once he had the first coat on, we waiting a few hours and then he applied two more coats just to make sure that it was covered and sealed well.
When it was all said and done, we couldn’t believe the change. The tile looked brand new! We did put new caulk all around the edges to finish it off and we added a new window and trim, but this shower and tub area looks like a million bucks now. We saved so much time and money doing it this way.
This is definitely the easiest way to paint tile. It will update the look of your bathroom without breaking the bank to do it. To see more about this project, head to my blog post.
