Many of us have a desk job where it’s required we sit at a computer all day. Or maybe you have a lengthy commute to and from work, so you’re sitting in your car for an extended period of time each day. Regardless of the reasoning, sitting too much can be extremely damaging to your health. In fact, recent research suggests it might even be worse for you than smoking.

A study published in the medical journal Current Cardiovascular Risk Rep revealed that sitting for too long can be as harmful as inhaling secondhand smoke. “It’s likely that future generations will look back at our sedentary working practices with the same incredulity that we now regard the idea of a smoke-filled office or airplane,” reported the British Journal of Medical Practice.
