A Cute Stepback Hutch

I’ve finished my furniture hoarding for LSM and I’m feeling less chaotic now that I can just work on projects and not worry about having to find them. One of my favorite finds so far has to be this adorable little step back hutch that I found at a local auction house.

No doubt it had not been used or cleaned recently but with those adorable draw details… I just couldn’t pass up it up.

I was so happy to hear that I had the winning bid and got to bring her home! I gave her a wash and scrub then let her dry in the sun before bringing her inside to work on.

the piece originally came in the 3 pieces. The bottom half and lid were detached, as well as the top shelving unit.Kyle secured the lid to the base for me and re-attached a few trim pieces. I decided to keep the top detached for easier transport but it could easily be made into one with a few screws.

NO BODY FREAK OUT But I did decided to add some paint.WAIT, WAIT, WAIT! Don’t click away yet!I did it in a very tasteful way.I wanted to try out Shackteau Interiors Milk Paint again in White Beach. If you have been following along, you might know that I tried out their black formula on a china hutch makeover I did a few months back and I didn’t love the result. We can chalk that up to “user error”. I had tried it over top a valspar paint which is probably what made it react the weird way that it did. I wanted to give the brand another shot with just paint on plan wood.

So I mixed my paint and applied the first coat on just the interior panels of the base and top shelving unit. I decided that I would leave off the doors for now, one of them is missing a trim piece and both are missing their glass inserts.

Per-usual with most paints the first coat is usually pretty ugly. I let it dry for about two hours before adding a second coat.I could have added a 3rd coat to achieve a more opaque look but I think that would have felt too “new”, plus I had already used up the whole bag.

I gave the painted areas a light distressing as a finishing touch and then called this project done after wiping it down with a damp cloth!

I wanted to keep as much of the original patina on the exterior as possible. I like the imperfection of having one drawer darker than the other so I let that extra character alone.

This cute little stepback hutch will also be making her way to The Lucketts Spring Market that is being held at the Berryville, VA fairgrounds May 17th-19th!I still haven’t figured out her origins so if you happen to have any guesses as to what that would be please let me know! I will be bringing the doors to the top with me for the lucky person that takes her home. Like I said before, one of them is missing a trim piece and both lost their glass inserts at some point in their travels.
