Colorful Chest of Drawers Makeover

I found this French provincial chest of drawers at the Goodwill and it needed a makeover.

The top of the chest had some wear and I decided it was best to strip it using Klean Strip.

Always wear gloves, a mask, and have proper ventilation when using this product as it’s pretty potent.

I used a chip brush to liberally apply it over the entire top and let it set.

After 15 minutes or so you can use a scraper and remove that finish. You can see how it is actually bubbling up as the stripper does it’s job.

Once I stripped the top I used mineral spirits on the top to remove any left over stripper then sanded the top smooth with 220 grit sandpaper.

Once I cleaned the chest and scuff sanded it was finally time to paint.

I live for color so I laid out a few colors to figure out my palette along with some brushes and a water mister bottle. Since I couldn’t decide on just one color I used all of these colors.

These are all chalk style paints.

After priming the entire piece I worked from the bottom up to the top using each of my colors.

This is the first coat and it always looks scary and that is normal.

After I did a couples coats of each color I then took my water misting bottle and made sure I had a wet edge in between colors and I brushed horizontally where each color met to give it a soft transition to the next along the sides of the piece. Chalk paints blend and distress so nicely.

I decided to distress the edges a little with some 320 grit sandpaper and I sprayed all the hardware with my favorite gold metallic spray paint here.

Lastly I used Wise Owl salve to seal the finish before putting the hardware back on.

On the left you can see the chalky finish and how the salve on the right gives it a nice sheen.

This pretty gal is already for its new home now.

I love to give colorful, fun makeovers to pieces so they can be loved and enjoyed once again.
