Southern Butter Rolls

Cinnamon roll fan? (Aren’t we all?) Well then you’ll be a big fan of Southern Butter Rolls, which are very similar to cinnamon rolls, but up the ante with a sweet and buttery sauce that surrounds the rolls as they bake. They’re tender and pillowy, even though the dough used here is closer to a quick biscuit dough than the yeast dough you generally see with rolls. That means they’re quicker to make – there’s no rising time at all! – which is good news since their straightforward sweet and buttery flavor is one you’ll want to come back to again and again.

If you’ve made biscuits before, the dough here will seem familiar. You cut some chilled butter into a mixture of flour, baking powder, and baking soda until it comes together, just like you do with biscuits, but in this case you roll it out into a single thin layer.

You then spread that dough with plenty of butter, and sprinkle it with cinnamon and sugar.
